Singapore TV Guide for October 2021: Streaming, broadcast and cable
Every month, we’ll tell you about all the new shows on terrestrial and cable channels, as well as what's streaming on Netflix, Disney+, HBO Go, Viu, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video and iQiyi.
Highlights
With Halloween coming this month, there are plenty of ways to scare yourself with terrifying television shows like Amazon Prime Video's I Know What You Did Last Summer, Netflix's Locke & Key, and Apple TV+'s Invasion. Superhero fans will be glad to see Batwoman returning on on HBO GO and the Legends Of Tomorrow coming back on WarnerTV. There are fewer K-dramas this season, but Viu's Chimera looks like it might be a fine choice.
Young Sheldon (Season 5) (8 Oct, Fridays 8.35pm) WarnerTV (StarHub Ch 515; Singtel Ch 306)
It's 1989 and 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper has skipped four grades to start high school along with his less-intellectual older brother. As he struggles to be understood by his family, classmates and neighbours, his mother arms him with the best tool she can come up with: reminding bullies his dad is the football coach and his brother is on the team. The fifth season sees both Sheldon and his sister, Missy, running away from home — even as his mother Mary gets upsetting news about Sheldon's father, George Sr.
It's been announced that there'll be a time jump in the middle of Season 5... and we also see that George Sr ends up in the hospital in the trailer. We know that Sheldon's father passes away in around 1995 (when Sheldon is 14 years old), so this might be the season when the hammer falls. Still, we've had red herrings before, like the first season's third episode, when George Sr gets a minor heart attack (which he eventually survives). Will this be the most devastating season of Young Sheldon yet?
Batwoman (Season 3) (14 Oct) HBO GO
With the Bat-villain weapons and accessories still out in the streets, it's up to Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) and her allies to retrieve them before they can fall into the wrong hands. However, the formerly villainous Alice (Rachel Skarsten) has joined the Bat team — which threatens to upend the existing dynamics of the team. Now, a new generation of Rogues rises, and the only thing standing between them and the destruction of Gotham City is the Bat Team.
I have to admit, I'm still not used to seeing Wallis Day replace Ruby Rose as Kate Kane (the Batwoman of the first season), nor am I used to the idea of the new Batwoman being Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie). With Alice no longer being the central villain of this season (presumably), it looks like the Mad Hatter might take up that role. It was also announced that Poison Ivy would be played by Bridget Regan, so I'm looking forward to seeing the show's interpretation of that villainess — the Mad Hatter's a bit of a B-lister Bat-villain, to be honest.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (15 Oct) Amazon Prime Video
This teen horror series is a fresh adaption of the 1997 horror film of the same name. After four friends make a pact to cover up a car accident in which they killed a man, they find themselves stalked one by one by a brutal killer who seemingly knows about what they did the previous year.
Slasher flicks are always fun, and the most striking thing about this television adaptation is the sheer diversity in the cast (compared to the blindingly white 1997 version). And given that it's a story about teens, social media will definitely play a part in it (even though we don't see many social media shots in the trailer), so it'll be fun to see how that will be integrated into the original narrative. Still, it is telling a story which most people know about already, so it remains to be seen if it can continue to shock and terrify with its treatment of the series.
Locke & Key (Season 2) (22 Oct) Netflix
Based on the comic book series of the same name, this supernatural horror mystery series follows the adventures of three siblings who move to their ancestral home after the murder of their father. They discover magical keys in the house that give them a vast array of magical powers and abilities — but sinister forces are also after the keys. Season 2 sees life returning to normal for the siblings after the events of Season 1. However, the demonic entity they were battling is still around, having taken on another form...
So we ended Season 1 with the revelation that the big bad Dodge wasn't banished — they had actually thrown another friend through the Omega Door instead, thanks to some shapeshifting machinations. Also, another demon is now on the loose, having possessed someone else. This season looks like it'll have a lot more thrilling revelations for the characters, and seeing Dodge wreak even more havoc will be great fun.
Invasion (22 Oct) Apple TV+
Invasion is a sweeping, character-driven science fiction drama series that follows an alien invasion through different perspectives around the world. Set across multiple continents, “Invasion” stars Shamier Anderson, Golshifteh Farahani, Sam Neill, Firas Nassar and Shioli Kutsuna.
My biggest question after seeing the trailer is — what are these aliens? Sure, we get a glimpse of them, but it doesn't tell us much. It looks like the series will focus more on the human element of the invasion, and how it impacts ordinary people and their lives. I'll be keen to see how they (eventually) fight off the aliens.
