SINGAPORE — Samyang’s Korean spicy ramen is one of the most popular instant noodles in Singapore. It stands to reason that, sooner or later, someone would think of turning it into a snack.

That’s exactly what local snack brand, Crusty’s has done. The company has turned Samyang’s Hot Chicken Flavour Ramen into a snack form – its new product, Hot & Spicy Chicken Flavoured Fish Skin Crisps.

The new snack was launched today (15 Dec) and will be available at S$7.50 per pack in stores under NTUC FairPrice and Prime Supermarket, and petrol stations. It is also available at Crusty’s Shopee shop online.

Crusty’s is also known for its Soy Skin Crisps with flavours like Salted Egg and Wasabi Seaweed.

“Being a snack brand in Singapore, we are always on the lookout for ideas that will intrigue your taste buds,” Crusty’s told Yahoo Lifestyle SEA. “After multiple rounds of research and development, a new flavour was born – we recreated the explosive Samyang Korean Spicy noodles into a snack form!”

Here’s our exclusive review of the fiery snack – we can vouch that it indeed packs a punch in terms of spiciness!

Crusty’s says their snack is “jinjja spicy” and “jinjja shiok” – jinjja meaning “really” or “very” in both Korean as well as Hokkien.

Hot & Spicy Chicken Flavoured Fish Skin Crisps comes in 100g packets. Each serving of 100g contains 612kcal.

The ingredient list on the packaging states that it contains Pacific dory fish skin, hot and spicy chicken seasoning, chilli, sugar, vegetable oil, and flavour enhancer E621, which is MSG. No preservatives are used.

The package has a ziploc-style seal, which means that it is resealable in between bites.

Upon opening the packet, the crisps fill up about half of the packaging:

The texture of the fried fish skin pieces are very satisfyingly crunchy.

The fish skin doesn’t look like it’s covered in a lot of chilli, but that’s deceptive. I can tolerate pretty high levels of spicy food – I happen to love Samyang Hot Chicken Flavour Ramen – but even a few pieces of this was enough to leave my tongue and lips burning.

Crusty’s recommends that you pair their Hot & Spicy Chicken Flavoured Fish Skin crisps with a glass of milk, which will help to ease the spiciness.

The spicy flavour comes with a chicken-flavoured sweet-and-savoury seasoning that may be slightly overpowering for some.

For chilli lovers who love it as hot as they come, this snack will be a good challenge for you. For lesser mortals who can’t take truly spicy food – approach with caution!
