Singapore is ranked among the top 10 cities for both dining and shopping, according to the latest Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index: Indulgences, released on Friday (21 December).

The index ranks 162 cities in terms of total international overnight visitors and the amount they spent in the cities in 2017. Singapore came in fifth in overall spend in shopping, with US$4.7 billion (S$6.43 billion) spent.

In terms of overall spend on food and beverages, Singapore is ranked 10th with US$2.2 billion spent.

Dubai came up tops in both rankings for 2017, with its visitors spending US$8.91 billion on shopping and US$5.94 billion on dining.

Increase in total expenditure spend

Compared to 2016, Singapore has seen a 9 per cent increase in terms of total expenditure spend, with travellers in Singapore spending an average of $286 per day in 2017. These travellers spent 27.6 per cent of their total expenditure on shopping, and 12.9 per cent on dining.

Other Asian cities on the two lists include Bangkok and Tokyo. Major global cities such as Paris, New York and London are also present and accounted for.

Mastercard Singapore’s country manager Deborah Heng said, “Travelers are increasingly looking for authentic and unique experiences, with food and shopping offering a gateway into a city’s culture, people and history.

“With its vibrant malls and quaint eateries offering a wide variety of local and international cuisines, it is no surprise that Singapore ranks among the top five and 10 cities globally for shopping and dining respectively, providing visitors a truly immersive cultural experience.”
