A Singaporean fashion designer has been experiencing backlash for her latest Hari Raya fashion collection after many called it out on social media for being too sexy. Hari Raya Puasa will be happening from 25 June this year.

After unveiling her “EID ’17 BY FATIMAH MOHSIN” collection on 10 May, many criticised Fatimah Mohsin’s outfits for being too sexy, some even calling the outfits inappropriate and disrespectful.

Popular Malaysian site “OHBULAN!” even posted an article about the backlash on their Facebook page on 15 May, attracting more attention to the matter.

‘I sincerely apologise’

In a recent interview with the designer, Fatimah explained to Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore that she had never intended to offend anyone with her collection, clarifying that her outfits are not for ready-to-wear and can be customised to suit customers’ needs.

“It was never my intention to offend anyone or be disrespectful, and for that I sincerely apologise,” said the designer about her collection, which is currently on sale via FatimahMohsin.com and via appointment visits to her gallery.

She added, “On a positive [note], I am truly appreciative for the support of our clientele who have been encouraging and recognise that each piece they select will be customised just for them; whether it’s adapting it to be a mermaid bottom, or to extend the sleeves – all done keeping true to the aesthetic of the design.

“Clients of this collection come from diverse backgrounds and from different countries. What they all have in common is the desire for something non-traditional, fashionable and exclusive which they can wear with their hijab, mixed and matched with other pieces, or simply for use at other events.”

Fatimah is also a sought-after stylist in Singapore, who has been dressing up many television celebrities on the Suria TV channel. She is the face of Fatimah Mohsin The Wedding Gallery and has been in the bridal and fashion industry for over 18 years.

For her latest Hari Raya collection, her outfits embrace a woman’s curves with peplum tops and long mermaid skirts in blue, red and black.

Collection influenced by travels to Santorini

When asked about her inspirations behind the controversial collection, Fatimah said that she was inspired by her recent travels to the Greek island of Santorini.

“I was inspired by the breathtaking views and architecture, which is reflected in the colour palette and silhouette of the designs,” she said.

“We will only be producing very few pieces for each design because each and every garment will be carefully customised and made-to-measure to fit individual customer’s personal style and preferences.

“As soon as our specially-selected fabrics are used up, the design will no longer be available. We know that, for our clientele, exclusivity is key because everybody wants to look their festive best, and not run the risk of chancing upon someone else in the same outfit,” she continued.

Despite the negative feedback, her outfits – priced from $98 to $368 – have been receiving positive response, with some of them already sold out.
