Fans of Mr Kiasu can rejoice, as the beloved symbol of Singaporeans’ spirit of paranoia is being revived in a new comic book series and a film adaptation.

Author Johnny Lau is launching the first book in the series, “Mr Kiasu: Everything Also Like Real”, on 9 Sept at the CharaExpo 2017 at Suntec City. The new Mr Kiasu series will be published by Japanese publisher Shogakukan Asia, and Lau is also working with production company mm2 Entertainment on a film featuring Mr Kiasu next year.

The creator of the iconic character wants actor Chew Chor Meng, who played Mr Kiasu in a 2001 Mediacorp sitcom, to have a cameo. The Mr Kiasu comic book series ran from 1990 to 1999, with a limited edition comic book released as part of the National Library Board reading campaign in 2013.

According to Lau, Mr Kiasu’s new book series will follow the character through his retrenchment in an economic slowdown, followed by an attempt at starting his own company.

The news of Mr Kiasu’s comic book comeback comes shortly after artist Sonny Liew became the first Singaporean to win an Eisner Award , the comic industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.
