Singapore chef Bjorn Shen's Bird Bird restaurant closing down
After two years of running Bird Bird, celebrity chef Bjorn Shen announced on Monday night (6 November) that he will be shuttering the restaurant later this month.
Shen made the announcement via social media, adding that the restaurant’s last day of service will be on 26 November. He also hinted at the cutthroat nature of Singapore’s F&B industry as a reason for the restaurant’s closure.
“We all know the statistics when it comes to restaurants and cafes in Singapore; and how 7/10 don’t make it past the first couple of years. We played. We lost. But I’m glad we tried nonetheless,” said Shen in the post. The restaurant is located at 97 Frankel Avenue and is popular for their variety of fried chickens, from Southern to Thai.
Shen teamed up with another local chef – Anthony Yeoh from the famed Cocotte restaurant – to set up “Bird Bird” in 2015. The restaurant has been nominated for Best Cafe at this year’s Chope Diners Choice Awards. However, the chefs will be pulling out due to the restaurant’s impeding closure.
In his farewell post, Shen also included a touching note for his employees. After thanking them for their tireless work, he said, “Disbanding this team is the hardest part for me, but remember what I keep telling you – business failure never rests on the shoulders of employees; it is solely the responsibility of the owner. Don’t ever blame yourselves for this.”
The restaurant will also host a three-day farewell menu from 24 to 26 November.
