Singapore actress Ya Hui dreamed of joining the army when she was younger
It’s rare to hear women in Singapore talk about joining the army, but local actress Ya Hui dreamed of joining the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) back when she was still in secondary school.
“I thought that it would be quite cool to be the only female in an army camp,” said the 30-year-old at a media conference on Thursday (11 Jan) for upcoming army horror-comedy show “Die Die Also Must Serve”. The online series also stars Shane Pow, Nick Teo, Ben Yeo and Hazelle Teo.
However, she ended up pursuing an acting career instead after realising that army life might be too tough for her.
During the interview with Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore, co-star Pow cheekily interrupted, “She decided that she wanted to be pretty on screen.”
He added, “She is one of the prettiest Singapore female lieutenants on-screen.”
While her army dreams won’t come true, Ya Hui seems to enjoy being an army personnel on TV. Besides portraying a fierce and authoritative woman in the show, she enjoyed wearing the uniform every day on set.
“I felt really smart and as if I were a real Madam,” said the actress, who has also starred in past TV shows such as Channel 5’s “Point of Entry”.
“Die Die Also Must Serve” airs on Toggle on 18 January and will run for 14 episodes.
