Is Simon Kinberg writing and directing the next X-Men movie?

There’s been an unusual amount of rumours flying around lately concerning the future of the blockbuster X-Men franchise. What we do know is that Fox has at least four more movies planned for the franchise, one of which is the New Mutants movie with director Josh Boone.

It was also recently confirmed that a seventh X-Men movie is in the works, but with Bryan Singer (who directed four of the six X-Men movies) busy with other projects, speculation about the new director is rife.

Enter one Simon Kinberg. Apparently Kinberg is in talks to not only write, but direct the latest X-Men project, supposedly titled X-Men: Supernova, which will deal with the Dark Phoenix storyline in the comics. Sophie Turner, who played young Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse, has already said that she’s signed up to play the telekinetic mutant at least one more time, though it’s unclear which movie she will appear in.

For those who aren’t as familiar with him, Kinberg is basically Fox’s version of Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige. Kinberg has been the producer for three X-Men movies, and wrote the script for X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and the latest installment, X-Men: Apocalypse (2016).

If the rumours are true, this would mark Kinberg’s directorial debut. I’m not so sure it would be best for Fox to entrust the franchise to a first-time director. But then again, Kinberg has been an integral part of the X-Men production for the past few years, so he definitely has in-depth knowledge about the X-Men movieverse.

To add fuel to the fire, Kinberg recently Instagrammed a post of him having dinner with not one, but two Charles Xaviers.

Kinberg is currently on the Logan press tour with Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, so it’s not such a surprise to see him breaking bread with the latter. What’s really interesting, however, is James McAvoy’s caption in his repost of the same picture: “I can’t wait for the summer.”

Is this an indication that they’ve signed McAvoy on for more X-Men movies? And if so, is he going to appear in New Mutants, Supernova or both? Do we still get Michael Fassbender as Magneto? JUST TELL US ALREADY!
