SilkAir unveiled its Boeing-737 Max 8 on Wednesday (4 October), which comes with refreshed interiors, roomier seats and a more extensive in-flight entertainment offering.

The regional wing of Singapore Airlines also announced that its new aircraft will be flying passengers to its first ever Japanese destination, Hiroshima, on 30 October.

“With a return flight service to run three times a week, this route will also be the only non-stop service between Hiroshima and Singapore,” SilkAir said in a press release.

“Japan, in general, has always been a strong [destination] for outbound flights. Hiroshima is the first destination that showed a compelling business case,” said SilkAir chief executive Foo Chai Woo at a media event.

The Business Class seats on the Max 8 offer a bigger personal space and added seat recline. There is 25 per cent greater seat pitch as compared to the ones in SilkAir’s previous Business Class. To top it off, passengers on board the Business Class will also get to enjoy gourmet coffee brewed fresh on the flight, a first for SilkAir.

Passengers on board the Hiroshima-bound flight will also get a chance to dine on Japanese cuisine with dishes such as chicken curry don and Omu rice.

The airline’s Economy Class gets a facelift with the seats now designed in aqua and light grey as compared to the previous peach or green. Each comes complete with USB ports and holders for your tablets and phones.

Throughout the flight, the cabin storage is roomier and the interior lights offer a more relaxing ambience. The LED lights are programmed to change colour according to the music played in the background as well as the time of day.

The in-flight entertainment via the SilkAir Studio platform offers more than 100 Hollywood and international movies, 40 television shows and the latest music.

SilkAir will be expecting two more Max 8s by the end of the year, with another 34 on order. These aircrafts will also be deployed to other longer haul destinations like Cairns, Darwin, Kathmandu, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
