An insider's guide to the best bars and nightclubs in Sicily, including top wine bars and beachside partying. By Lee Marshall, Telegraph Travel's Sicily expert

Kursaal Kalhesa, Palermo

If you’re being taken around Palermo by locals, chances are you’ll end up at this multi-tasking bar, restaurant, bookshop and concert venue at some point in the evening.

In a restored aristocratic palazzo in the Kalsa district, down by the port, the Kursaal’s upstairs restaurant does Arab-tinged fusion food – but we prefer the downstairs wine bar, where cool young palermitani mix over glasses of Carricante or Nero d’Avola.

In summer you can eat or drink outside in a pleasant garden courtyard made fragrant by night-blooming jessamine.

Morgana Bar, Taormina

Pretty but touristy, Taormina is not exactly Sicilian Nightlife Central – but if you’re still restless when all the daytime cafés have closed, head for this late-night cocktail bar, done out inside in a kind of 1960s Surrealist style. The cocktails are perfectly acceptable, the outside space is a lovely place to sip and drink, and there’s a smallish dance floor that usually sees some action after midnight.

Tinkitè, Syracuse

This charmingly boho bar and café in the heart of Ortygia, Siracusa’s sea-girt centro storico, is a relaxing place for everything from morning cappuccino to a great light lunch to afternoon tea (they have more than 30 varieties). In the evening, it’s a venue for regular live music happenings.

The atmosphere is particularly laid-back and welcoming around aperitivo time, when an alternative crowd of locals and ex-pats meet up over wine and snacklets.

Mercati Generali, Catania

Probably Sicily’s most influential club, the “General Market” spreads out over the warehouses and pressing rooms of a restored 19th-century winery in the distant southern suburbs of Catania. In summer, the scene moves outside into the palm-shaded garden courtyard.

The vibe is laidback – but once the music starts, you know you’re where it’s at. Some of Europe’s top DJs appear here, as do big-name live rock and pop acts (generally before they become big names).
