Sheron Dayoc withdraws from Marawi project

24 Sep – Filmmaker Sheron Dayoc recently announced that he will no longer be involved in the Marawi film project, "Children of the Lake".

As reported on Inquirer, the director, who was originally scheduled to helm the movie, shared the news on Facebook citing "different perspectives" as his reason for withdrawal.

"My professional career started and rooted in telling the narratives of the marginalized Muslim Mindanao and this project is no longer reflective of my beliefs as a Mindanao storyteller. The producers and I have totally different perspectives on how the story of Marawi should be told.

"Like everyone else in the production team, the sacrifices made for this project is no joke - declining several TVC jobs and pushing other film projects to give priority to this film.

"This isn't a love story, horror or comedy film that I would openly compromise. This is such a sensitive subject matter and the story must be treated with prudence in respect to all the lives lost during the war in Marawi," he said.

Dayoc added that he had fought for his ideas on the best way to tell the story, regardless whether it is the right one or not.

"I wish Spring Films the best and I hope that they will make a Marawi film that is truthful and beneficial to the Marawi people, [especially] the victims of war," he added.

The project was first announced by actor Robin Padilla and Piolo Pascual, whose goal was to "tell the true stories that happened during the crisis", and use the proceeds for the rehabilitation of the war-torn city.

Dayoc is most known for his award-winning movie, "Women of the Weeping River", which was told through the backdrop of the conflicts experienced by the people of Mindanao.
