Shake Shack's Sambal Mayo menu pays homage to Singapore flavours

·2-min read

Shake Shack, the fast food chain originally from New York, is introducing a limited time Singapore-inspired menu that blends east and west.

Featuring items such as the Sambal Mayo Burger (beef), Sambal Mayo Chicken Shack and Sambal Mayo Fries, the menu will be available from Wednesday (1 June) until 15 August.

And you'd better prepare your taste buds for a kick.

The spicy sambal sauce is made exclusively for Shake Shack by the Batu Lesung Spice Company and created by local chef Jeremy Nguee.

The Sambal Mayo Burger is a cheeseburger with cucumber, egg and ShackMeister onions with sambal mayo, while the Sambal Mayo Chicken Shack features a more familiar approach with crispy chicken and a cilantro lime slaw, cucumber and the namesake mayo.

Meanwhile the fries are topped with sambal mayo, bacon chunks and scallions.

We've previously seen variations of a nasi lemak burger, so what did the team think about this newest addition to the growing list of fusion menus from fast food outlets?

Our resident foodie, Bruce, said the Sambal Mayo Burger had elements of nasi lemak, but it wasn't nasi lemak, because "nasi lemak doesn't have minced beef".

"And I'm fine with it," Bruce said.

Meanwhile, our TikTok superstar Liz seemed to enjoy the Sambal Mayo Chicken Shack very much, agreeing that it was "very good" and that the mayo made the chicken patty feel "less oily".

"But it was spicier than I thought."

The Sambal Mayo Burger is available at $12.50 for a single patty, and $16.20 for a double, while the Sambal Mayo Chicken Shack goes for $12.50. The crinkle cut Sambal Mayo Fries cost $7.90.
