‘Sex and the City’ Is Getting a Follow-Up TV Series
So maybe Sex and the City 3 will never happen. But a new SATC series? That’s apparently in the works.
Sex and the City author Candice Bushnell has a new novel out in August titled Is There Still Sex in the City? that has been picked up by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content. The forthcoming television show, which Bushnell is set to executive-produce and write the pilot script for, will follow the lives of New York City women navigating their way through friendships, dating, marriage, and their sex lives. The major difference between this iteration and the original Sex and the City is that the women featured are in their 50s and 60s.
“The original Sex and the City book and series served as a groundbreaking touchstone for an entire generation of women, myself included,” Nicole Clemens, president of Paramount TV, told Deadline. “We’re thrilled to be able to continue that conversation from the underrepresented point of view of women in their 50s and answer the question with, ‘Yes! There is more sex in the city!’”
Bushnell also weighed in on her excitement about the series’ revival in the same statement: “It didn’t used to be this way. At one time, 50something meant the beginning of retirement-working less, spending more time on your hobbies and with your friends, who, like you, were sliding into a more leisurely lifestyle. In short, retirement-age folks weren’t meant to do much of anything but get older and a bit heavier. They weren’t expected to exercise, start new business ventures, move to a different state, have casual sex with strangers, and start all over again. But this is exactly what the lives of a lot of 50- and 60something women look like today, and I’m thrilled to be reflecting the rich complexity of their reality on the page and now on the screen,” Bushnell told Deadline.
The original Sex and the City aired on HBO from 1998 to 2004 and starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, and Kristin Davis. The show was followed by two spin-off movies, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010), and a prequel series, The Carrie Diaries, starring AnnaSophia Robb and Austin Butler, that aired from 2013 to 2014.
Although the deal has been confirmed, there’s no green light at the moment to start filming. None of the characters from the original Sex and the City have been slated to return or make a reappearance in the new show.
