Selena Gomez continued her Met Gala tradition of placing hidden messages in her dress

Selena Gomez stunned at the 2018 Met Gala in a sheer custom Coach dress that she accessorized with a simple cross necklace (a nod to the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme), a robust tan, and a hidden message. Say what? Even though Gomez didn’t go full-out with the Catholicism theme like some other stars (Rihanna literally came dressed like the pope), she gave a much more subtle nod to the religion with the secret bible verse she slipped into her wardrobe design.

Gomez’s handbag featured the phrase “A woman who fears the lord is a woman who shall be praised,” which is from Proverbs. The Bible verse was custom embossed by Coach onto the bag using Gomez’s own handwriting. According to a statement from the brand (via Glamour.com), the same message also ran along a ribbon on her gown.

Gomez also wore Coach to the 2017 Met Gala and, if you looked at the bottom of last year’s purse, it featured the hidden phrase: “love yourself first.” She has this same phrase tattooed on her body but in Arabic.

So clearly, walking the Met Gala carpet with Coach and hiding secret messages for fans is kinda Gomez’s thing. We hope she keeps it up every year.

Here’s last year’s secret handbag message:

Coach designer Stuart Vevers told Vogue that Gomez is his only inspiration when designing for her: “The starting point when I work with Selena is always Selena,” Vevers told Vogue.

It’s clear that Gomez has something to say and isn’t afraid to share it.
