See Zachary Quinto Becoming Spock for 'Star Trek 3'

Zachary Quinto has done something highly illogical: He’s leaked a photo of himself getting into character for Star Trek 3. The actor, who will reprise his role as Spock, posted an Instagram picture of himself (below) with the Vulcan’s short hair and angular eyebrows, minus the pointy ears.

“Someone is preparing to emerge,” Quinto wrote on the first shot to emerge from the sequel’s set.

Meanwhile, Quinto’s co-star Zoe Saldana posted her own behind-the-scenes picture of herself in a Star Trek 3 trailer (below). She’s not looking like communications officer Uhura quite yet — but this appears to be the first step in achieving her character’s signature hairstyle.

Star Trek 3, in theatres July 2016, is the latest instalment in the rebooted franchise launched by J.J. Abrams in 2009. The third movie will be directed by Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin, with a script co-written by Simon Pegg (who also plays Star Trek’s chief engineer Scotty).  Plot details are still under wraps, but Idris Elba is rumoured to be joining the cast as a new villain.

Notably, this will be the first Star Trek feature film since the passing of Leonard Nimoy, who created the role of Spock for the 1966 TV series (and reprised it briefly in 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness). In tribute to Nimoy, Quinto is asking fans to contribute to the Kickstarter campaign for the documentary For the Love of Spock, directed by Leonard Nimoy’s son Adam. Learn more about it here.
