Sean Penn Originally Cast in Tom Hardy's Oscar-Worthy 'Revenant' Role

Could Sean Penn have missed out on a third Oscar? The 55-year-old actor (and El Chapo interviewer) was originally cast in the Tom Hardy role in the 12-time Oscar nominated American frontier epic The Revenant.

Hardy revealed in a recent interview with Latin channel De Película that he got the role of ruthless fur trader John Fitzgerald only after Penn bowed out. (See it above at the 0:44 mark.)

“Leo called me up because Sean Penn initially was to play Fitzgerald,” said the 38-year-old actor, who earned his first Oscar nomination for the part in the Best Supporting Actor category. “Then [Penn] was unavailable. I was going to be doing [the film] Splinter Cell. Leo called me up and said, ‘I’m doing this film with Alejandro [Iñárritu]. It’s really cool.”

Hardy, who had previously teamed with DiCaprio in the Christopher Nolan dream thriller Inception, signed up. Meanwhile, Splinter Cell, based on the popular Tom Clancy book that was turned into a hit video-game series, also lost Doug Liman (Edge of Tomrorow) as its director and as of now is listed on IMDb as “in development.”

We’ll find out if Hardy wins his first Oscar on Feb. 28, when the 88th Academy Awards airs on ABC.

Sorry, Sean!
