SDCC 2017: Noah Hawley is developing a Doctor Doom movie. Not kidding.

Remember how, at the end of the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot (see our review), we all said to ourselves: “What we really need now is a Doctor Doom movie!”? Yeah, we didn’t do that either. But 20th Century Fox’s endless attempts to mine the FF universe continue and the fanboys wait in fevered anticipation.

It was at the end of the Legion panel on Thursday (July 20) at San Diego Comic Con that Noah Hawley, best known for his work on the TV series Fargo and Legion, that he announced his next project:

“I’ll just say two words to you. The first word is “Doctor”, and the second is “Doom”

At which point the whole of Ballroom 20 must’ve erupted in impassioned shrieks and wails of surprise. Trust me, we’ve been there for other major SDCC reveals, including this year’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle panel.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Hawley is not only developing, but looking to direct a movie about one of Marvel’s most well-known and notorious supervillains. We’ve already seen Victor von Doom in both the 2005 and 2015 Fantastic Four movies. Here he is played by Julian McMahon in the former:

And here he is again, played this time by Toby Kebbell in the doomed (sorry!) 2015 reboot:

After the 2015 reboot bombed, it’s apparent that Fox executives are approaching the franchise from a different angle this time. Apart from the Doom movie, there are also rumours that Seth Grahame-Smith is working on a spin-off focused on Franklin Richards, the son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm. Maybe they’re taking their lead from Sony’s attempts at a Spiderverse, with plans for a Venom movie starring Tom Hardy, which will also star Carnage.

I wish I could be excited about this, but after the sheer badness of the last Fantastic Four movie, I wish Fox and Marvel could just make up and work together. I mean, Sony managed to do it, so why can’t they?
