Believed to harness the energies of Mother Earth, crystals have been used since the Stone Age for a variety of purposes such as a protection against unseen “evils”, bringing in new opportunities, and even influencing emotions.
Often used in crystal healing, a pseudoscientific alternative healing and medicinal technique, these semi-precious stones’ alleged successes with the users are usually attributed to the placebo effect.
Scientifically, crystals are ordered arrangement of atoms; minerals formed with a regular, consistent, 3D-patterned molecular structure.
Enthusiasts often believe the vibrations between these atoms to be the key to crystal therapy – the frequency of vibration is different for different materials, and hence, the crystals’ vibrations can influence the user’s, bringing forth a positive change.
The use of crystals is prevalent in many cultures and religions since ancient times. In recent times, though, crystals are thought to possess a mixture of abilities ranging from bringing wealth, regulating emotions, to boosting health.
Crystal users believe that fostering a deep connection will allow the stones to work effectively. Enhancing the connection with your chosen crystals can be done by meditating with them, touching the stones whenever you need reaffirmation, or simply by carrying them in your bag.
A common belief is that citrine crystals attract wealth and abundance, rose quartz being beneficial for romance and interpersonal relationships, and that obsidian stones will help to protect one against negative energies and unseen “evils”.
While some are sceptical to the results of using crystals, many people still swear by their crystal bracelets or home ornaments.
