Scarlett Johansson is the highest paid actress in Hollywood for the second year in a row.

Johansson earned $56 million (£45.6 million) in the year starting 1 June 2018, as calculated by Forbes.

This smashes the figure of $40.5 million (£33 million) that carried her to the top of the earnings list last year.

Much of this total is down to her sizeable deal as part of the principal cast of Avengers: Endgame, but she has also nabbed an eight-figure payout for her leading role in the Black Widow movie, which is due in cinemas next year.

Dwayne Johnson topped the male list of highest paid actors with earnings of $89.4 million (£73.6 million), courtesy of his dominance of Hollywood 'action man' roles and position as a central cog in the lucrative Fast & Furious machine.

Johansson's total would have put her in eighth place on the male list, behind Bradley Cooper and Adam Sandler.

Sofia Vergara came in second place on the list with $44.1 million (£35.9 million) for the year, followed by Big Little Lies stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman just behind on $35 million (£28.5 million) and $34 million (£27.7 million) respectively.

The top five was completed by Jennifer Aniston — a stalwart of the list — who earned $28 million (£22.8 million) in the year studied.

Veterans including Jennifer Lawrence and Cate Blanchett were absent this year, with newcomers like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Margot Robbie and The Handmaid’s Tale actor Elisabeth Moss joining the ranks.

Overall, the women in the top ten brought in $314.6 million (£256 million) between them - a 69% increase on last year.

Their total is still dwarfed, however, by the $588.3 million (£478.9 million) earned by the ten highest paid male performers.
