Sandra Ng invited to join AMPAS

30 Jun – Nearly 400 new artistes and filmmakers have recently been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) this year, and actress-producer Sandra Ng is also in the list.

As reported on Mingpao, the actress is among the 53 invitees that hail from outside the US, which also include Tamil actor Suriya, Hindi star Kajol, "Drive My Car" writer-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and "Flee" writer-director Jonas Poher Rasmussen among others.

Sandra is also the only Hong Kong artiste to be given the honour.

Sandra, who shared the news on social media, stated that she was surprised to receive the invitation from the AMPAS early in the morning.

"I was thinking Oscar? Are you kidding me? Then I started saying Oh My God for nearly five minutes, even the person in quarantine is woken up by the noise," she said.

Meanwhile, other actors who have been invited include Jamie Dornan, Ariana DeBose, Troy Kotsur, Michael Greyeyes, Marco Rodriguez, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

If Sandra is to accept the invitation, she will be able to vote for the 95th Academy Awards to be held in March next year, among others.

Sandra's good fortune has been on the rise in recent years, having won praises for her performance in the 2021 movie, "Zero to Hero". The film was selected to represent Hong Kong in the Best International Feature Film category at the 94th Academy Awards.

Sandra has also been nominated in the Best Actress category for the movie at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards and won the Best Actress award at last year's Chinese American Film Festival.
