Samuel Kim named 'Most Searched Korean New Singer' at Yahoo Asia Buzz Awards
K-pop star Samuel Kim was named the “Most Searched Korean New Singer” at the 2017 Yahoo Asia Buzz Awards show in Hong Kong on Wednesday (6 December).
The 15-year-old American singer rose to the top of search rankings after he appeared as a contestant on the Korean talent reality show, “Produce 101 Season 2”.
In his acceptance speech, Kim gave a shout out to his fans (known as Garnets) and said he was honoured to receive a trophy in Hong Kong, his first time receiving an award overseas and his first as a solo artiste.
He also attempted to speak some Cantonese, telling his fans “I love you”, and performed his songs “Sixteen” and “Candy”.
The young K-pop sensation also shared a toast with senior Oath executives, but his glass was filled with apple juice instead of champagne. Oath is the parent company of Yahoo, and also owns other brands such as Engadget, Techcrunch and HuffPost.
Kim, whose full name is Samuel Kim Arredondo, was born and raised in Los Angeles to a Korean mother and a half-Hispanic father. He was last in Hong Kong for a solo showcase on August, and recently released an album, “EYE CANDY”, in November.
The annual Buzz Awards is in its 15th year, and rewards the “buzziest” and most appealing icons in the Asia-Pacific region, based on search results from Yahoo’s search engine.
This year, the awards show took place at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and featured appearances from popular Hong Kong celebrities such as Hacken Lee, Kara Wai, Chrissie Chau, Gillian Chung of Twins, Natalie Tong, and Malaysian actress Lin Min Chen.
