Sammul Chan and Shirley Yeung discuss salary restriction

12 Oct – Hong Kong actors Sammul Chan and Shirley Yeung recently stated that the new guideline on artistes' wages in mainland China may not affect them much.

As reported on Singtao, Sammul, who has been expanding his career in mainland since the early 2010s, stated that he is not much affected by the new restriction since he is not paid as much as big stars like Zhao Wei and Huang Xiaoming.

"My fees are very reasonable and everything can be worked out fine," he said.

Sammul also supports the new guideline, saying that with such restriction, a production can use the budget to make their show better rather than having most of the money being used to pay big celebrities.

On the other hand, Shirley, who has been balancing her career in Hong Kong and mainland, said that she is watching the developments closely.

"I have yet to make any adjustment to my rates, but the fees I get right now are post-tax anyway," she said.

China's new restriction on artistes' fees reportedly has already been enforced, with reports saying that actresses Zhao Wei and Shu Qi have been asked to return two-thirds of their fees for the variety show, "Chinese Restaurants 2" following the implementation.
