Sammo Hung worries about the fate of martial arts movies

8 Apr – Hong Kong martial arts actor Sammo Hung believes that the genre is doomed if the younger generation is not interested in learning martial arts anymore.

As reported on HK01, the actor, who spoke at a seminar as part of the 43rd Hong Kong International Film Festival, admitted that people are no longer interested in learning martial arts after watching such movies, unlike in the past, where actors like him and Jackie Chan inspire a lot of young people to know more about kung fu.

"It's hopeless. Nobody wants to film action movies anymore. Without any martial arts films, what's the point of learning martial arts?" he said, adding that people are more interested in joining singing competition nowadays.

Sammo also expressed hope that the Hong Kong government would do more to support local films, especially now that other countries are surpassing Hong Kong.

"It hurts me so much, but there is nothing that I could do," he said. "The government spent a lot of money for the opening ceremony and the nothing. Why not continue to invest in Hong Kong films and develop them to change the future of Hong Kong films?"
