Roald Dahl's popular children's book "James and the Giant Peach" is inching closer to its live-action version, as Sam Mendes begins early talks to direct the feature, reports Deadline.

Nick Hornby, who penned the novel and screenplay for "High Fidelity," is also in talks to write the screenplay.

The beloved 1961 book, which tells the story of an orphan who befriends human-esque bugs who live inside a large peach, was turned into a Disney animated film in 1996. That picture made $28.9 million at the domestic box office.

Disney is looking to bring other animated features to life, with live-action films based on "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," Dumbo" and "Cruella" in the works.
