'Sakura' trumpet trees blooming in Singapore: Where to take those Instagram-worthy photos

Pre-COVID-19, Singaporeans will be making their way to countries such as Japan, Korea, and Taiwan for their annual fix of those pretty cherry blossoms viewing while taking a well-deserved break. With travel still restricted for everyone’s safety, there is no way for us to make our way to view these gorgeous blooms, or is there?

According to National Parks, Tabebuia Rosea or trumpet trees are in season now and are mass flowering around the island. These blooms look similar to the sakura that we are used to seeing in foreign countries.

Yahoo Lifestyle SEA looks at five different spots around Singapore that carry these “cherry blossoms” where you can take Instagram-worthy photos of and perhaps, be the family’s next excursion spot.

1) Japanese Cemetery Park

Located in a quiet residential neighbourhood in Hougang, the 30,000-square-metre Japanese Cemetery Park contains nearly 1,000 graves of Japanese civilians in Singapore and soldiers, holding a valuable piece of history on the grounds.

The vivid pink bougainvillaea flowers, blooming across the park, look similar to the sakura flowers blooming in Japan. It is a photo-worthy spot that many visits on the weekends to capture memorable shots with the pink flowers lining an arched walkway.

2) Telok Blangah Hill Park

With pink bougainvillaea flowers blooming in the park during March and August, Telok Blangah Hill Park is located at Telok Blangah Green off Henderson Road in Bukit Merah. Instagram-worthy photos are usually taken on the grey stone stairs and the pavilion overlooking the sea of flowers.

It is, unfortunately, also common to see people stepping on the grass to be in the midst of the bright pink flowers or plucking the flowers to get some good shots.

3) Gardens by the Bay

Until 11 April, Gardens by the Bay has their sakura flowers in full bloom in the Flower Dome. Here, you can find both cherry blossoms and peach blossoms – along with torii, traditional Japanese gates, and red-crowned cranes – transporting you to Japan without actually travelling.

Signalling spring’s arrival, cherry blossom symbolises a time of renewal and hope, while peach blossoms represent marriage, purity and womanhood in Japan.

4) Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park

A line of trumpet trees has recently bloomed in Bishan Park, bringing hues of whites and pinks to the park amidst the flourishing greens. For those that stay around the park, the blossoms can be seen clearly from their houses.

These trumpet-shaped flowers can grow up to 8cm and blooms for slightly more than a week.

5) Jurong Lake Gardens

Part of the development at Jurong Lake Gardens in 2015 included the planting of seasonal flowering trees such as the Malayan crepe myrtle, the rosy trumpet tree and the pink mempat. Then-National Development Minister Lawrence Wong had likened the tropical trees to Japan’s famous sakura, stating that Singapore will soon “have our own ‘cherry blossom festival’”.

The pink trumpet trees are now in full bloom in the gardens, with the flowers falling into the lakes in the park, creating a different feel and view than the other parks in this list. There are plenty of spots around the park to take photos of, with some of the park’s benches conveniently located so you can capture the trumpet trees clearly in the background.
