John Waters is the new face of Saint Laurent.
The original Hairspray director, known as the Pope of Trash for his love of bad taste, has been tapped by the high-end label, helmed by Anthony Vaccarello.
The new fall/ winter 20 campaign has been shared on Instagram, with the label posting two black and white photos, as well as a video.
In one still, the 74-year-old, synonymous with his pencil thin moustache, poses in sunglasses and a dark suit as he fiddles with his tie. The second photo sees him snarling at the camera, holding the glasses and dressed in the same double breasted suit.
As for the video, the Baltimore native explains: “My name is John Waters. Transgression is when you break the rules and you make people laugh. It’s really mind control.”
Shot by regular Saint Laurent collaborator David Sims, the advert marks the latest in a long line of celebrity-fronted campaigns.
Vaccarello, who has been the creative director at Saint Laurent since 2016, is known for avoiding obvious A-listers for his monochrome campaigns. He has previously featured Charlotte Gainsbourg, Keanu Reeves, Travis Scott and Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard.
