This Safari-Themed Playroom Is the Craziest Room You'll See Today

When designer Stephanie DeBrincat was tasked with converting a nursery into a safari-themed playroom for her clients' two children, "the goal was to create a space [that would be utilized for] play time, reading and–since this design was being installed during the pandemic–a space for learning and school work as well." She opted to build off of a number of existing design features that she and her team had previously installed in the nursery—such as wood panel-esque wallpaper, textured walls, and carpeting—to transform the space without completely altering it.

Naturally, DeBrincat's clients had several functional goals, including carving out room for a reading nook, incorporating a multifunctional play table and open space areas for play time, and increasing the amount of light in the space, given that the room's "existing shutters made natural lighting sparse."

While imagining the playful sprawl, DeBrincat followed her belief that "creating a kids' space is all about timelessness." She advises others to "focus on designing an environment that’s personalized, functional and layered in comfort and whimsy."

For example, if your child loves a particular character or toy, the designer advises you "look for vintage items that will help carry that theme. These items can be classics and typically deliver a more aesthetically pleasing look."

Ultimately, she steers clear of creating "overly-themed" rooms for children. "An elevated toddler room design is possible," DeBrincat asserts. "I’m on a mission to design luxurious, safe and health-forward kids spaces that are still fun."
