A royal expert has claimed an unlikely source was the reason behind Prince William and Kate Middleton’s infamous 2007 split — his step-mother Camilla.

The shock allegations come from royal insider Christopher Anderson who revealed the Duchess of Cornwall once had serious doubts about the young couple’s future.

When news of the now-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s months-long separation first broke, Mr Anderson explained the collective shock within aristocratic circles given their belief that a wedding would soon be on the cards.

However, it wasn’t long until he says, before rumours of the real trigger for the split were relayed. “People started telling me that Camilla was behind it,” he said.

The biographer went on to explain how the Duchess of Cornwall’s upper-class childhood affected how she viewed who should qualify to enter The Firm.

“Camilla is a bit of a snob,” Mr Anderson explained to US news website The Daily Beast. “She’s an aristocrat, she has always been moving in royal circles.”

“She did not look at Kate as someone who was worthy of joining the royal family.

The duchess then reportedly continued to push her influence on Charles, and encouraged him to ‘force’ his son to ‘make a decision one way or the other’.

“It has been since confirmed publicly that Charles did suggest to William that he either make a commitment to Kate or basically set her free, as it were.”

Soon after the alleged recommendation, the young prince did just that and cut ties with his girlfriend of almost six years — a separation which lasted for much of 2007.

Although William is thought to have solely instigated the split, Kate later admitted she found strength in the time spent apart from the man she would one day marry.

“You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn't realised,” she said in the couple’s engagement interview in November 2010.

“I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger and I really valued that time for me as well although I didn't think it at the time.”

The Cambridges married in April the following year and welcomed their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in 2013, 2015 and 2018.
