Ron Perlman Reveals Details On Hellboy 3′s Story
The outcry for a third and final movie in the ‘Hellboy’ trilogy has made itself heard ever since 2008′s ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ made a minor dent a the box office, and now Ron Perlman has given fans a glimmer of hope.
In a recent appearance on Empire’s podcast, the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ hard man revealed how torn he was over reprising the title character. “I really feel as though I’m done with the character,” he admitted.
“I don’t have a burning desire to put that s**t on again. But Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it’s such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it.”

It’s clear del Toro’s vision for a trilogy conclusion is indeed epic - so much so it convinced Perlman to do a 180 on the idea - but that doesn’t mean we will ever actually get to see it.
Neither instalment managed to boast huge profits during their cinema runs, which is why ‘Hellboy III’ is struggling to secure its financing. However, there’s a passionate fan base who are desperate to see how the narrative plays out, but, in truth, it’s a case of whether del Toro and Perlman can talk Universal around.
‘Hellboy’, released in 2004, didn’t do a whole lotta business at the box office. In fact, the film flopped, taking a measly $99 million from its $66 million budget.
Four years later, it’s sequel, ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’, performed a little better, amassing $160 million, yet barely recouped its budget and marketing costs.
'Hellboy II’ gave us some resolve, with Big Red’s missus, Liz (Selma Blair), revealing her pregnancy with twins, which many believed would’ve led into a third film. According to what del Toro told Perlman, the kids would have a huge roll: “One would look like the mum and one would look like the dad. And one of them was going to be completely f***ing corrupt, the other one angelic. Which one was which? Only Guillermo would make the f****d-up-looking one be the angel. So then that adds to the saga.”

After more probing, the ‘Pacific Rim’ villain let slip on what exactly the acclaimed director had told him. Speaking about the character of Hellboy, he said, “he’s the beast of the Apocalypse. He has to take down civilisation. He has to. It’s non-negotiable. That’s the foundation for the story, and that’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it.”
It certainly sounds like it’d be one heck of a conclusion to the trilogy, even though the second film did end somewhat happily. But we all want to see the world burn, don’t we?
Perlman revealed that, even from the very beginning, it was always meant to have a third instalment. “We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it.“
The actor’s push on social media for ‘Hellboy III’ has attracted attention in recent months, with a lot of fans on board to see the project materialise. So all we can do is wait and, should Universal green light it, anticipate the explosive finale to the indie hero franchise.
