A robot is about to start performing gynecological surgeries in a New York hospital. No, we’re not kidding.

The robot, named Da Vinci, will complete non-invasive surgeries at Elmhurst hospital in Queens, New York.

The FDA approved Da Vinci’s technology way back in 2000, so this was, like, a long time coming.

If letting a robot near your body with a knife sounds terrifying, you’re not alone, but doctors say robotic surgeons will actually be safer and more accurate than human ones.

“Robotic surgery has several important benefits, including faster recovery times and less blood loss,” said Dr. Barry Brown, director of ob-gyn services at Elmhurst. “Women who in the past would have been hospitalized for a week are now able to go home in a day.”

The machine, operated by a (human) doctor in another room, will make cuts far smaller than any human could. This will spare patients a lot of pain, Brown said. Hooray, technology!
