Robert Pattinson is back to franchise filmmaking after signing up to appear in The Batman.

According to Deadline, the actor will appear in a trilogy of Batman movies directed by Matt Reeves, the first of which will see his Bruce Wayne in “detective mode.”

“It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional,” Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter in January. “It’s more Batman in his detective mode that we’ve seen in the films.

“The comics have a history of that. [Bruce Wayne] is supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been.”

“I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime,” he added. “It’s going to allow his character to have an arc that he can go through a transformation.”

Reeves told Yahoo Movies, while promoting War for the Planet of the Apes, that he was hoping to make a very “emotional Batman story.”

“I do see a very strong parallel between [Batman and Caesar] because they’re both damaged characters who are grappling to the do the right thing in a very imperfect world,” the director said. “A world that’s filled with all of the corruption that is human.”

The filmmaker credits Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight trilogy director, for inspiring his approach to making movies.

“What I love that [Nolan] did was that he took the genre seriously,” Reeves told us.

“What studios are willing to make at the moment is a very, very narrow band of films. What I discovered is that this genre has the potential to be about something more. You can use the metaphors of the genre to talk about [a lot].”

The Batman will revolve around a younger Bruce Wayne and Reeves is said to have taken cues from Frank Miller’s Year One comic, which recounts his first year as a crime-fighter.

Other characters that appear in this story are Jim Gordon, having just transferred to Gotham from Chicago, Selina Kyle and Harvey Dent.

The Batman is scheduled for release in 2021.
