If he can talk to The Hulk, he can talk to animals…

According to Variety, the 51-year-old ‘Avengers’ star has landed the role of Doctor Dolittle in the upcoming movie ‘The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle’.

“Robert Downey Jr. will star in the movie ‘The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle’, based on the classic character who can talk to animals, for Universal Pictures,” they revealed. “Stephen Gaghan, who most recently directed Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Gold’, will helm the film from his own screenplay. Tom Shepherd wrote an earlier draft.”

Universal Pictures acquired the screenplay following a heated bidding war… and now it looks as though Robert Downey Jr is set to be our next Doctor Dolittle.

As strange as that may sound.

But what’s in store for Doctor Dolittle?

‘The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle’ is almost the same as a 1922 book by the original author, Hugh Lofting. Pitched to a more mature audience, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle is split into six parts, and covers the voyages of the titular Doctor Dolittle to Spider Monkey Island.

But will this be the subject of the movie?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see, as the plot remains firmly under wraps.

Either way, it sounds as though we may be getting a more faithful adaptation than recent versions of the Doctor Dolittle story. And following the 1998 Eddie Murphy version, it’s probably about time.

Although quite how faithful remains to be seen.
