Robert Downey Jr has taken to Instagram to share his emotional yet still hilarious farewell from the set of Avengers: Endgame, which even saw him squeeze in a joke at Chris Evans’ expense.
You can check out the Academy Award nominated actor’s final words to the cast and crew of Avengers: Endgame by clicking on the video below, which Downey Jr uploaded to his Instagram on Thursday.
Beautiful, beautiful stuff. As Robert Downey Jr stands before an awful lot of the Avengers: Endgame crew he at first admits, “I have a lot of feelings,” before then quipping, “But I’m going to take Chris’ lead and save it for Instagram. Thanks a bunch.”
The fact that Downey then points to the camera after making this joke might mean that Evans was the one that actually filmed his parting words. But of course that is just a guess.
Either way, Downey’s joke provoked strong laughter from the crew, before they then broke into applause as the actor went around the room giving several people a hug, including Marvel’s head-honcho Kevin Fiege and Endgame’s directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
WARNING: There are SPOILERS ahead for Avengers: Endgame. So if you still haven’t seen the blockbuster, first of all, what have you been doing? But, secondly, please don’t read ahead.
It goes without saying that the above clip is all the more emotional considering the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, which sees Downey Jr’s Iron Man using the Infinity Gauntlet to defeat Thanos, but then dying because of the energy that it emits.
There would be no Endgame without Robert Downey Jr, as it was his casting as Iron Man in September, 2006, and then the success of the film in 2008 that laid the foundations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which at this point consists of 22 films that have grossed a combined total of over $21 billion at the box office.
