Ricky Gervais's Most Offensive Golden Globes Gags

So Ricky Gervais has been confirmed as the host of the 2016 Golden Globes, despite vowing he’d never do it again, and despite the former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president saying that he ‘crossed the line’ when he hosted in 2011.

But here we are, and the controversial comic will be back to burst the celebrity bubble with a few barbed home truths, and probably not making that many friends along the way.

To celebrate, here’s a selection of his finer (and more cringeworthy) Globes gags…

In 2010: “I hope I haven’t offended anyone. It’s not my fault. I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”

In 2011: “It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast.”

On introducing Robert Downey Jr in 2011: “He has done all of those films, but many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as The Betty Ford Clinic and the Los Angeles County Jail. Robert Downey Jr!”

In 2011: “It was a big year for 3D movies. 'Toy Story’, 'Despicable Me’, 'Tron’. It seemed like everything this year was three-dimensional. Except the characters in 'The Tourist’.”

In 2012: “I’m not to libel anyone. And I must not mention Mel Gibson this year. Not his private life, his politics, his recent films, and especially not Jodie Foster’s Beaver. I haven’t seen it myself. I spoken to a lot of guys here, they haven’t seen it either. That doesn’t mean it’s not any good.”

In 2010: “Looking at all the wonderful faces here today reminds me of the great work that’s been done this year… by cosmetic surgeons.”

In 2011: “Also not nominated, 'I Love You Phillip Morris’. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then. My lawyers helped with that joke.”

In 2012: “The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton – a bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought.”

On 'Bridesmaids’ in 2012: “Farting, burping, cursing, performing wild sex acts, even pooping in the sink. I heard for research they spent the weekend with Dame Helen Mirren.

In 2011: “I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumour going around that the only reason 'The Tourist’ was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.”

On 'Boardwalk Empire in 2012: “It’s about a load of immigrants who came to America about a 100 years ago and they got involved in bribery and corruption and worked their way up into high society. But enough about the Hollywood Foreign Press.”

Gervais hosts the Golden Globes on January 10, 2016.
