Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has addressed speculation that he may direct Episode IX: sorry folks , it’s not going to happen.

.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson was asked during a press conference in Japan whether he might replace Colin Trevorrow. Trevorrow left the project last week amid reports that his working relationship with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy had become unmanageable.

.

Johnson’s answer may disappoint some of you:

“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it. Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again, and to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”

Both Johnson and The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams had been mentioned as possible successors to Trevorrow, but it appears that the pressures of directing just one Star Wars movie takes its toll.

Trevorrow is the fourth director to leave a Star Wars project, after Phil Lord and Chris Miller and Josh Trank. Here’s hoping Disney manages to sort out the working relationship and align visions with whoever directs Episode IX.
