Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s writer and director Rian Johnson has raised doubts that his potential new trilogy for the franchise will actually get made.

Ahead of the release of The Last Jedi Lucasfilm announced that Johnson was already developing a brand new trilogy of Star Wars films, which would be set in a different corner of the galaxy far, far away and would revolve around all new characters.

In the years since Johnson has remained pretty tight-lipped about his idea, simply repeating that he is working on the scripts and never gave any indication that the films wouldn’t see the light of the day.

That was until BANG Showbiz asked Johnson whether he had any plans to return to the Star Wars franchise, which provoked him to respond, “We’ll see. I am still talking to Lucasfilm and they are figuring out what they are doing. We’ll see what happens. I’ll be thrilled if it happens. I am working on my own stuff, too.”

Johnson’s remarks regarding Disney’s more cautious approach with Star Wars echo CEO Bob Iger’s previous comments on their plans for the franchise.

While The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi each thrived at the box office upon their releases, grossing over $4 billion combined, the failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was dogged by production problems and failed to make $400 million worldwide, provoked Iger to tell the New York Times, “I just think that we might’ve put a little bit too much in the marketplace too fast.”

Disney will be hoping that Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker will reignite interest when it is released on December 20. If it does it might just save Johnson’s planned trilogy, too.
