SINGAPORE – As promised, Taiwanese singer-songwriter Eric Chou did not disappoint us. He made quite the entrance with his outfits, wowed with his vocals and even showed off dance moves at the Singapore gig of his “How Have You Been” 2019 Asia Tour. Yahoo Lifestyle SEA attended the first night (13 Dec) of his concert.

The ballad prince seems to be moving away from his fresh-faced, bright-eyed image with a penchant for romantic tunes, giving us an energetic, hyper side of him.

For his two-and-a-half-hours long concert, his transition towards an EDM focus is clear but he still makes sure to stay close to his balladry roots.

Here are the reasons why the multi-faceted singer-songwriter left us feeling breathless and pumped up throughout the night.

He hit all his high notes effortlessly

There is no doubt this boy can sing, leaving us mesmerised with his impressive vocal range by killing all the high notes effortlessly, not once, but many times.

The 24-year-old serenaded the audience with fan-favourites “What’s Wrong”, “How Have You Been”, “Let’s Not Be Friends” and “The Chaos After You.”

However, as much as we love his new musical direction, ballads are undoubtedly what the crooner does best.

He looked and dressed for the part

He opened the concert with a bang in a full-length coat, which he shrugged off in a quick motion, revealing a suit and chest muscle peeking from underneath.

The boyish-looking singer looks good in whatever he wears, mainly because of his 1.8m-tall stature. Most of the six concert outfits he wore are from his fashion line, EC95.

Any die-hard fan would know that Chou has a penchant for fashion and designer brands.

His last outfit? Gucci from head-to-toe.

He has been working on his body

In that first outfit he wore, he definitely showed off his body. He told Yahoo Lifestyle SEA in a recent interview that one of his 2020 resolutions is to build up his body. Boy, has he clearly been working out.

He also flaunted his biceps when he took off his jacket to reveal a sleeveless T-shirt and performed his latest songs “Something About LA” and “Forever Beautiful.”

His concert’s theme was on point

We were mesmerised by the ballerina slow-dancing in a half-bubble as Chou sang his ballads “At Least I Remember” and “Smile with a Broken Heart” and later on, was joined with a team of hip-hop dancers gyrating and hip-thrusting on the platform for his fast and pulse-racing songs such as “Old Days” and “Without Her”.

Chou even whizzed down the dance pole himself.

He serenaded fans at the grand piano in the middle of the stadium

He had us swooning when he played the grand piano in a dreamy pink suit and sang “Unbreakable Love” and “Beside Love.”

It is a pity we could not see him re-enact the scene of him playing the piano in a box suspended in mid-air from his Kaohsiung Arena concert.

His fan service was on point (and included a lot of “hearts”)

He tries really hard to connect with his fans, holding a ticket autograph session and fan meeting two weeks before his concert.

And he makes it a point to turn the attention back to his fans during the concert and have them sing-along to his songs.

“This is your KTV, ok? Sing to your heart’s content, ok?” he said.

He also counts MediaCorp artistes, He Ying Ying, Nick Teo, Hong Ling, Elvin Ng and Romeo Tan as his fans.

How do we know?

The camera made sure to pan the audience as much as possible. If you are lucky, you would have caught yourself on the selfie camera on the screen, taking a “selfie” with Chou.

He also teased his fans by drinking water sensually from a bottle and asked, “Does anyone want my bottle?”

Yes, he even showed us dance moves

The last time he was here in June 2018, he put on some dance moves. This time, he also made sure to display his dancing moves through his fast songs, “Nobody But Me” and “Let It Go”.

We have to admit, though they are not as exemplary as his vocals, we have to give Chou credit for trying. After all, he broke into the scene as a piano-playing ballad-singing guy and moved out of his comfort zone to show us another side of him.

He also gave us just a little sneak peak of his upcoming album with the song, “小时候的我们” (literally translated: “Us When We Were Young”), which Chou promised, will be released before the year ends.

We sensed, this will be the greatest Christmas present for his fans.
