Review: Pizza Hut's Ji Li crab pizza
It’s that time of the year again, when we subject our colleagues to some new experimental foods, and this Chinese New Year is no exception as well. Pizza Hut has released their new offerings for the festive season, including a Ji Li crab pizza, and a Treasure Platter featuring a collection of signature sides, including a flavourful rendition of the perennial local hit ngoh hiang (Five Spices).
Taking a leaf of inspiration out of Singapore’s famous local dish, the chilli crab, Pizza Hut has thrown in a concoction of sweet chilli crab sauce, crab sticks, shrimps, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella cheese on pizza crust.
We ask our hungry colleagues what they think of this new product:
“The sauce has a spicy (kinda gingery) flavour I would normally like on a puff (or even on top of rice). On top of the dense pizza dough though (haha), it doesn’t seem to mix well with that kind of texture.
The fake crabmeat was just really fake. It tasted fake and texture was all wrong. Maybe because it felt like starch on top of starch. It would have been more suited on a puff pastry I think. or a saucy mix on top of nice fluffy white rice.” – Paolo
Janet feels strongly about chilli crab: “Don’t mess with chilli crab. Although it smells somewhat familiar, the taste just isn’t quite the same. Also quite disconcerting to have prawns – this isn’t a seafood pizza – that keep falling off. Better to sprinkle more of the imitation crab meat to make it more visually pleasing. The ngo hiang was tasty and quite authentic.”
