Remy Ma Wants To Help Women Who Struggle With Pregnancy
In a video for Citizens of Woke Wonderland from Essence, rapper Remy Ma opened up about the struggles of pregnancy. Specifically, about how she suffered an ectopic pregnancy and a subsequent miscarriage, and that she can't conceive without outside medical procedures. And in the future, she hopes she can help other women who have faced similar struggles.
"I'm trying to start my own fund right now, so that women who are like me or have similar situations to me but can't afford it, they could possibly get these procedures done," she said. "Because as a woman, that's one of the things you can do that no other being can do."
Ma said she was lucky to have the finances to pay for medical care, but that many women who want to conceive can't afford pregnancy treatments. In Vitro Fertilization can cost thousands of dollars, and ACA does not cover infertility treatments. To make matters worse, the recently announced Republican health care act does not mandate coverage of maternity care at all, making the prospect of having a child for many women even more fraught.
Ma called out "pro-life" politicians in her video, asking "If you're pro-life, why would you not set up something so women who can't conceive and women who want to be to be mothers and women who want to have children can do so?"
Her experience also speaks to how little we speak about the difficulties of pregnancy. A 2000 study said 19.7 out of 1,000 pregnancies in North America are ectopic, and the rate of miscarriage is 15%-20% for women who know they are pregnant. Odds are that a woman will need medical care related to pregnancy at some point in her life, and she shouldn't have to worry about money to get the care she needs.
