‘Red Oaks’ Appropriately Channels The ’80s In Faux TV Promo

Season 1 of Amazon Studios’ Red Oaks nailed the 1980s vibe with its coming-of-age story set at a suburban New York City country club that felt a bit like what a Caddyshack: The College Years would have looked like had it existed — only smarter and with fewer gophers. It certainly joined the streaming service’s original series like Man In The High Castle, Catastrophe and even, a bit less so, Woody Allen’s Crisis In Six Scenes in nailing their time and place and making them a character unto themselves.

Fitting then, that Amazon has dropped this “commercial” ahead of the Gregory Jacobs- and Joe Gangemi-created series’ Season 2 return November 11. If you haven’t seen the series yet, consider this a spot-on primer of what you’d find — a modernized version of a TV ad you might have found tucked between breaks of the local Saturday night pro wrestling show when you were a kid. And with new-season episodes directed by the likes of David Gordon Green, Hal Hartley, Amy Heckerling and Gregg Araki, it looks like the series will still have game.
