The crew of the Red Dwarf are returning for a feature-length episode to air next year, it's been confirmed.

Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn will be back to reprise their roles as Lister, Rimmer, The Cat and Kryten, lost in space aboard the eponymous mining ship.

The two-hour movie, penned by show co-creators Doug Naylor, will be shown on digital channel Dave, the home of the show since 2009.

“I’m really excited to get back on board with the boys from the Dwarf,” said Craig Charles.

“I can’t wait to discuss Robert’s prostate problems, Chris Barrie’s hip replacement and have a proper look at Danny’s new dentures whilst they marvel at the agelessness of the Charles physique. I will surely require the services of a chiropractor after dragging these doddering misfits through what promises to be our most epic adventure yet.”

Added Naylor: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity of making more Red Dwarf. UKTV has been a never-ending source of support and encouragement since we first started working together ten years ago. Can’t wait to start shooting a format that I don’t think has ever been done before. Smoke me a kipper, we’re back and not just for breakfast.”

Steve Coogan and Henry Normal's Baby Cow will produce the special, and it will be filmed both on location and in front of a live audience at Pinewood Studios.

It will be accompanied by three retrospective shows about the series' 30-year history.

First airing on BBC2 in 1988, the cult sci-fi comedy was revived by Dave in 2009, with the three episode miniseries Red Dwarf: Back To Earth.

After clocking up record ratings for the channel, three more series followed, the most recent airing in 2017.
