Have you ever wondered what it takes to get a seat next to Taylor Swift? You know, whether she’s at an awards show or throwing one of her famous holiday parties, it seems like whoever is sitting by her is having the time of their lives. That’s why it’s so awesome that Gina Esposito (the VP for MTV music and talent) spilled the beans to Cosmo about what it takes to sit with Taylor – or for that matter, any of our favorite celebrities.

As Esposito explains, these seating charts are arranged months in advance.

The biggest factor they take into consideration is who the celebrities want to sit near. That’s right: When celebrities RSVP for events, they’re able to put in requests for who they’d like to sit next to. That’s why you so often see celebrities near the same people, including, but not limited to, Taylor Swift’s squad.

Of course, when everyone wants to sit near a certain celebrity, like Taylor, this means that not everyone’s needs can be met.

At that point, according to Esposito, producers and the camera crew take into account who might have the best reactions, or who might best play off of each other when it comes to picture and GIF-worthy moments during the show or ceremony. Makes sense, right?

Esposito points out, too, that sometimes celebrities just sit where they want and ignore the seating chart all together. As she tells Cosmo, “As long as you’ve got eyes on that, to say, ‘Selena Gomez moved so she’s by Taylor, we’re good,’ then it’s all right. If we don’t seat them together, they find their way to each other anyway.”
