Real Madrid are considering a shock move for Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez when the transfer window re-opens in January, according to reports.

Carlo Ancelotti is keen to add another quality striker to his squad after the departure of Karim Benzema, and is a huge admirer of the Argentina international.

Erling Haaland is another player that Real Madrid are keen on, but with the Norway international in talks over signing a new deal at the Etihad, the Spanish giants are aware it would require a huge transfer fee to lure him away from Man City.

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe has also been linked with Real Madrid for a couple of years.

The France international’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning he will be available on a free transfer. Los Blancos have been favourites to sign him for some time.

There is no reason why Real Madrid couldn’t sign both Alvarez and Mbappe, though. So it will be interesting to see if the Spanish giants do make a concrete bid for the Man City star in January.

Real Madrid consider Alvarez approach

According to reports from Spain, (as cited by GOAL Live Blog at 3pm, Sept 9), Ancelotti has made Alvarez his top transfer target as he looks to bolster his attack when the transfer window re-opens.

The Real Madrid manager is being forced to rely on 33-year-old striker Joselu at the moment. The Former Stoke City player has scored one goal in four games this season.

Rodrygo has also been utilised as a centre-forward by Ancelotti this term, and has also scored one goal in four matches. His natural position is a right-winger, though, so Real Madrid definitely need to sign a new striker.

Alvarez could certainly be an excellent option. Since his arrival at the Etihad in January 2022, he has made 55 appearances in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and making six assists.

The 23-year-old is already a serial trophy winner, too. He played a key role in Argentina winning the World Cup last year, and helped Man City to secure a historic treble by winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup last season.

Pep Guardiola is, unsurprisingly, extremely happy with the Argentine. Alvarez is under contract at the Etihad until 2028, so it would take a huge offer for Real Madrid to sign him in January.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if they test the Cityzen’s resolve with a big-money bid.
