An original Star Wars poster has sold for over £10,000 at auction in London.

The rare one-sheet used to promote the 1977 film to audiences in Hong Kong, fetched £10,455 at Prop Store’s Rare Film Poster & Original Artwork auction yesterday. The company, one of the world’s leading film and TV memorabilia sellers, called the live auction at London’s BFI IMAX cinema in Waterloo “a truly unique event”.

The Star Wars poster was not the only lot to attract high bids, with an original UK quad for Hammer’s Dracula A.D. 1972, starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, selling for £12,300.

Interestingly, the most expensive movie poster ever sold was for Dracula, Universal’s 1931 adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker story, starring Bela Lugosi. That poster sold in 2017 for $525,800 (around £400,000) at an auction in Texas.

One of the most modern lots that attracted a lot of attention in the auction was a triptych of alternate posters for the Star Wars trilogy, designed by British artist Olly Moss. His striking minimal designs were originally released in 2010 with a limit of 400 copies each, at a price of $50 (£38) each. A trio of good examples from that original run yesterday sold for £4,305.

Not a bad mark up. Have you still got a set? Might be time to cash in.

Stephen Lane, Prop Store CEO commented on the auction: “We’re delighted with the success of our first Cinema Poster live auction which was held at the ODEON BFI IMAX London. After four successful Entertainment Memorabilia live auctions, we were thrilled to introduce the Cinema Poster auction and it was a truly unique event with a global audience. Prop Store are already making plans and accepting consignments for a second poster auction later this year.”

Star Wars props and artwork continues to attract top prices at auction, as an original Han Solo blaster used on Return of the Jedi recently sold for $550,000 (£418,000).
