Rami Malek dedicates Golden Globe win for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to Freddie Mercury

Of course, without Freddie Mercury, Rami Malek wouldn’t be basking in Golden Globe glory, so it was fitting that the Mr. Robot actor dedicated his win to the Queen legend last night.

In a heart-felt tribute, he called Mercury, who he played in hit biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, ‘a beautiful man’.

He also paid his respects to Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May, who were in the audience for the ceremony and served as the movie’s musical and creative consultants.

“Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man,” said Malek. “This is for and because of you, gorgeous.

“To you, Brian May, to you, Roger Taylor, for ensuring that authenticity and inclusivity exist in the music and in the world and in all of us.”

As well as scooping the gong for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, the movie won the Best Motion Picture award too.

“The power of movies is that it brings us all together,” said executive producers Graham King, and Jim Beach, Queen’s former manager.

“Freddie Mercury and Queen did that so successfully through their music and that’s what we always wanted to accomplish in the cinemas. To see that magic come alive and to see the incredible response of this film has been truly humbling to everyone.”

Notably not in attendance on the night was director Bryan Singer.

He was fired just a few weeks away from the movie wrapping over alleged absences on set, and was said to have clashed with Malek.

British helmsman Dexter Fletcher picked up the slack, but Singer retained his director’s credit, as per Director’s Guild of America guidelines.

Neither King or Malek mentioned Singer in their award acceptance speeches.

Bohemian Rhapsody beat competition from A Star Is Born, thought to be a shoo-in for the Best Drama award, along with Black Panther, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.

The movie was the eighth highest grossing film of 2018, and with a haul of $744 million (£583 million). It’s also now the highest grossing musical biopic of all time.
