Quentin Tarantino is boldly going where he hasn’t gone before – the world of blockbuster franchises! According to an exclusive report by Deadline, Tarantino has a great idea for the next Star Trek installment and he has even shared it with J.J. Abrams, who successfully rebooted the franchise.
Industry insiders say that the next course of action is to gather a team of writers who will work on Tarantino’s take and develop it into a working movie. If it works out, Tarantino may direct it while Abrams produces.
Tarantino is one of the rare contemporary filmmakers who makes original movies from screenplays he’s written from scratch. He has never really dabbled in the business of studio tentpole franchises, even though he has previously nexpressed interest in directing a James Bond movie. There’s no denying though that his work is heavily influenced by pop culture and he’s made Star Trek references in his films, most notably in Kill Bill vol. 1.
He is currently also busy prepping his latest original film, which is being developed at Sony. It’s been reported that it will be set in Los Angeles around the time of the Manson killing spree in 1969. He has approached Margot Robbie to play Sharon Tate and is said to be in talks with A-listers like Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt about the two male leads.
Tarantino is an auteur I admire tremendously – I’ve watched all of his films and have not disliked anything he’s done. To me, they’re either good or downright brilliant! So as a trekker, I am freaking out (in a good way!) at the possibility that he might take on the next Star Trek installment.
Can you imagine what a pulpy space adventure, from the director who gave us Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds, will be like?! And we’d pay good money to see Samuel L. Jackson play a Klingon!
What do you think? Can Tarantino deliver a bold take on this established sci-fi franchise?
