The Queen never fails to look immaculate when she’s stepping out in the public eye, with pristinely-applied lipstick and a healthy looking glow.

So it may surprise royal fans to hear that the 93-year-old does her own makeup almost every day of the year.

The only exception is Christmas Day, when the monarch employs makeup artist Marilyn Widdess to do her makeup ahead of the recording of the annual Christmas Day Queen’s Speech.

'You might be surprised to know that this is the only occasion throughout the year when Her Majesty does not do her own make up,' Angela Kelly, who has worked for Her Majesty for the past 25 years, writes in her new book, The Other Side of the Coin: the Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe.

The revelation is featured in an extract of the title, published in Hello! magazine. The work is currently available to buy for £14 on the Amazon website.

Kelly first worked as the Queen's Senior Dresser, later becoming Her Majesty's Personal Advisor and Curator (The Queen’s Jewellery, Insignias and Wardrobe) and In-house Designer.

As for the Queen’s go-to cosmetics, it’s well-documented her favourite nail polish is Essie’s Ballet Slippers.

She’s also said to be a fan of pink Elizabeth Arden lipstick and Clarins matte mineral powder, according to The Telegraph.

The Queen has previously been spotted applying her own lipstick in public, during the Commonwealth Games.

Kelly’s latest insight into the Queen comes after she revealed earlier this week that Her Majesty opted to say the line, “Good evening Mr Bond” for her part starring alongside Daniel Craig in the Danny Boyle sketch aired at the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games.
