Quantum of Solace director wanted to quit the film

James Bond’s ‘Quantum of Solace’ wasn’t all it was cracked up to be…

After the huge success of ‘Casino Royale’ it’s little surprise that another James Bond movie was soon put into production. ‘Quantum of Solace’ saw Daniel Craig return as 007… but it sounds as though making the highly-anticipated movie wasn’t plain sailing.

Marc Forster was soon hired as ‘Quantum of Solace’ director.

But disaster struck in the form of the Hollywood writers’ strike…

“It was tricky because we didn’t have a finished script”, Forster explained to Collider. “Ultimately at that time I wanted to pull out.”

Of course, the Writers Guild of America strike was huge.

Aiming to increase American writers’ Minimum basic Agreement (amongst other issues) it saw the writing community on strike for a massive 14 weeks…and its effects were felt across film and television.

“Ron Howard pulled out of Angels & Demons which Sony was about to do and they sort of shut down [allowing time for Howard to get the film into the shape he wanted first], and at the time I thought, ‘okay maybe I should pull out’ because we didn’t have a finished script.”

“But everybody said, ‘no we need to make a movie, the strike will be over shortly so you can start shooting what we have and then we’ll finish everything else.’ I said ‘yeah but the time crunch’.”

Unfortunately, the strike wasn’t over as soon as they thought.

Facing the prospect of finishing their shoot long before the strike had come to an end, Marc Forster was forced to knuckle down and finish the film off himself.

“The idea was to make a follow-up to Casino Royale and ultimately I felt like, ‘okay worst case scenario the strike goes on, I’ll just make it sort of like a 70s revenge movie - very action driven, lots of cuts to hide that there’s a lot of action and a little less story. To disguise it”.

At least that explains the choppy editing…

Along with Forster’s revisions, Daniel Craig is also credited with sitting down and making revisions to the script. And after the film had wrapped, they apparently had just five weeks to deliver the film’s final cut.

That’s quite a deadline.

Still, all things considered, Marc Forster is happy with the results. And who wouldn’t be? It sounds as though he pulled off a genuine, filmmaking miracle.

“I’m pretty happy with the film, and I must say now eight years after it seems like people have been embracing it more and more. When it came out it was very successful and people seemed to like it, but I think it gained more momentum as time went by.”

‘Quantum of Solace’ starred Daniel Craig as 007 alongside Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judy Dench and Gemma Arterton.

Marc Forster directed ‘Quantum of Solace’ based on a script by Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.

‘Quantum of Solace’ is available on DVD and Blu-ray .
