‘Quality’ Tottenham star lined up by Champions League club after official confirmation he’s done at Spurs
A Tottenham forward who’s barely featured this season may wind up playing for a Champions League contender next year, per a report.
It’s been a chastening season for Spurs that has resulted in the dismissal of Antonio Conte. Cristian Stellini too was ousted after replacing his fellow Italian. Ryan Mason is in temporary charge, though he too is struggling to get a tune out of an under-performing Spurs squad.
Tottenham won’t grace the Champions League next year and unless results go their way, might not be in Europe altogether.
Missing out on the Europa Conference League may well be a blessing in disguise. Many a top team have flourished in campaigns in which they had an abundance of free midweeks to help focus solely on the Premier League.
In any case, one player who won’t be a part of the Tottenham rebuild next year is Lucas Moura.
Tottenham recently confirmed the veteran Brazilian, 30, will leave as a free agent when his contract expires at season’s end.
Lucas has featured just 18 times for Spurs this season and only three of those were starts. A parting of the ways is clearly the best course of action for both the club and winger, though Lucas may surprisingly find himself competing in the Champions League next year.
That’s because reports out of Spain (as cited by Goal) reveal Sevilla are sizing up Lucas.
Sevilla currently sit a lowly 9th in LaLiga, though have advanced to the final of the Europa League. Success in the final against Roma on May 31 will see Sevilla earn safe passage straight into the group stage of next year’s UCL.
Sevilla’s interest in Lucas is understood to be a multi-year affair. However, the fact he’s now available on a free has finally made a move viable.
The report notes Lucas would bring ‘experience and quality’ to Sevilla’s forward line, though they are not alone in vying for his signature.
Who else is in the race isn’t stated, though Sevilla may well be the only side who can offer Champions League football – providing they beat Roma, of course.
