VPNs have never been so popular. In the first half of 2021 alone, no less than 616 million such apps were downloaded worldwide, according to Atlas VPN. That's more than double the number in all of 2020. Qatar appears proportionally as the country where the use of a VPN is the most widespread, ahead of the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.
The majority of the top 10 list consists of Arab countries, where the rulers tend to restrict internet usage. Using a VPN allows you to bypass these restrictions and enjoy the web and social networks without censorship.
Qatar comes out on top with almost one out of two inhabitants having downloaded a VPN this year, which is really impressive. For comparison, France appears in 57th position in this ranking with only 4.19% of the population having done the same. At the bottom of the pack are Japan and Madagascar with less than 1% of the population concerned. Note that China is not included in this study.
